Raul “Kaiser” Navarro

You want to get to know me?

The first thing you should know about me is that I’m a Nintendo fan at heart since the very beginning, or at least since I can remember; that doesn’t mean I just care and pay attention to Nintendo’s side of the Industry though. I also was a die hard Sonic fan back in the 90’s and in a way, I still am today. Though one would say that it’s better to forget about the blue Hedgehog now since all of his recent outings in 3D have been mediocre at best, but I still enjoy them and will keep waiting for that ‘perfect’ game of his.

What else do you should know about me? Let’s see here, I guess you can know about my passion for animation, design and sound. Anything that is visually creative and beautiful will capture my attention and will keep me ready to learn more of whatever it is; another very important thing about me is my love for Video Game Soundtracks, I just can’t get enough of them. They offer something so unique, something so creative that they are just engaging and immersive to listen to.

One important thing to add; I’m bilingual and can speak both English and Spanish (As this is my primary language) so don’t be surprised if I do shows in one language then another show in the other.

Favorite Game: Super Metroid & Super Mario Galaxy

Favorite Console: SNES & Wii

Like Kaiser, I was a Nintendo fan from the very beginning. While things have changed since then, Nintendo’s games are something I’ll always hold close to my heart. Even though today I spend more time with my PC and PS2 than my Nintendo systems, Nintendo will always be my favorite. I’ve been a fan of Mario as far back as I can remember. I remember playing Mario 3 on my NES when I was 3 years old, and I’ve loved Mario games ever since.

The reason game music is important to me isn’t simply because I enjoy it, but because of the memories it brings me. Listening to game music brings back memories of my childhood, friends, and of course, great games.

My gaming tastes have changed over the years, and I mostly play RPGs and multiplayer games. Over the past two years I’ve started playing more niche games, which I have found to have fantastic soundtracks. This is the inspiration behind focusing on niche titles for my show, I feel compelled to share not only the music, but the games themselves.

Favorite Game: Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga and Metroid Prime.

Favorite Console: PC, PS2 & GBA

Let me take you back to the grand year of 1998. It’s my sixth birthday and I’m being offered the choice between a bike and an N64. Which do you think I chose? Damn straight: an N64 with Super Mario 64! (Let me say for the record that I picked up the bike later and am now an avid biker, but that’s beside the point). From then on, I’ve been a die-hard Nintendo fan.

Sadly, my gaming time has dwindled in recent years due to what those who don’t understand gaming culture might call “a life,” but what I simply call different priorities and commitments. But even if I don’t have time to sit down and conquer the latest dungeon or grind my Black Mages to level 35, I can still put on some music in the background. Music is an extremely important part of my life: I am a jazz saxophonist and aspiring DJ after all. The really amazing bit about music for me, however, is that every single time I listen to a song, I can hear something different. Depending on the mood I’m in, how intensely I’m focusing, whether I’m listening to an expensive stereo system or simply headphones jacked into my computer, I can pick up on different parts of songs and end up with a different impression of the music.

Game music is no different and I find it to be some of the most expressive music out there. And just like regular music, it varies incredibly, not just from 8-bit to orchestra, but from Latin to techno and everything in between. For a guy like me who pretty much loves all types of music, you couldn’t ask for more.

Favorite Game: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker & The World Ends With You
Favorite Console: Wii, PC, & DS

It’s hard for me to even mention a time where I started playing games, because it’s been for as long as I can remember. I remember sitting alongside my older brother and playing Super Mario Bros. 3 waaayyy back when I was but a young’n. I suppose the console that first made a huge impact on me was the Super Nintendo, and I haven’t stopped ever since.

Gaming has had a huge impact on me for all of those years and hopefully will continue to do so as I grow older and have children of my own, who will (hopefully) be gamers to some extent as well.

The music of games has always had a huge impact on me as well, and that’s why I was so interested in doing a show for the radio blog. The memories some of these songs spark up are amazing, from awesome multiplayer brawls in Super Smash Brothers to deep single player atmosphere, each of these songs sparks some feeling in me, and I hope that they can do the same for you.

Favorite Game: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Metroid Prime & Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn

Favorite Console: SNES
